1.00 Faculty members and professional librarians who retire may wish to retain some formal affiliation with the University. The opportunity for such affiliation, and associated rights, shall be subject to the procedures outlined below.
4.00 Following retirement, faculty or professional librarians who wish to apply for Emerit status, must do so in writing to their chair, dean, or the University Librarian, as appropriate, within six months following the retirement date.
5.00 The title granted will be at the rank held at the time of retirement (e.g. Assistant Professor Emerit, Associate Professor Emerit, Professor Emerit, Librarian Emerit).
6.00 Each application will be considered by the department/faculty/library committee charged with recommendations on appointments, tenure, and continuing appointments, according to the following criteria:
(i) normally, applicants must have completed at least 10 years of service at the University.
(ii) applicants must have demonstrated sustained contributions in teaching; research and scholarly activity; academic, professional, and community service; or professional practice during their years of employment.
7.00 Applications which are recommended for approval by the applicable department/faculty/library committee will be sent to the dean or University Librarian, as appropriate, who will forward the application, along with his/her own recommendation, to the Vice-President: Academic and Provost for forwarding to the President, who will make a recommendation to the Board of Governors.
8.00 Applications which are not recommended by the applicable department/faculty/library committee may be submitted to the Senate Promotion and Tenure Committee (SPAT) or to the University Librarians’ Continuing Appointment and Promotion Committee (ULCAP), as appropriate, for review. SPAT or ULCAP will send a recommendation to the dean/University Librarian, who will forward the application, along with his/her own recommendation, to the Vice-President: Academic and Provost for forwarding to the President, who will make a recommendation to the Board of Governors.
9.00 The title will not confer any special rights or privileges, other than being listed, by rank, in a special section (Professor/Librarian Emerit) in the University calendars.
