Parent Policy: 11.1 Establishment, Operations and Review of Research Centres
1.1 Research Centres/Institutes (these terms are used interchangeably) promote and encourage scholarly activity of a basic or applied nature in an area that is not normally restricted to a single academic department. The purpose of this procedure is to provide a framework to establish a mechanism to formally recognize external collaborators as members of University and Faculty Research Centres/Institutes, and to provide institutional oversight of such appointments.
2.1 Community Fellow: An external non-academic individual who is actively collaborating with a University or Faculty Research Centre.
2.2 Junior Research Fellow: A Junior Research Fellow normally is an external Postdoctoral Fellow or senior PhD student who is actively collaborating with a University or Faculty Research Centre.
2.3 Research Fellow: Assistant and Associate Professors, mid-ranking government, industry, and community researchers who are actively collaborating with a University or Faculty Research Centre.
2.4 Senior Research Fellow: Full Professors, high-ranking government, industry, and other non-academic researchers who are actively collaborating with a University or Faculty Research Centre.
3.1 The University seeks to formally recognize, through the granting of titles, significant and sustained contribution to University and Faculty Research Centres from individuals who are external to the University and are not paid by the University.
3.2 Official recognition and designation of all Centres and Institutes is at the approval of Senate Committee for Research and Publication (SCRAP) following recommendations to SCRAP by the Governing Body of the Research Centre.
3.3 Recommendations from the Governing Body of a Centre to SCRAP shall be accompanied by the candidate's CV or resume and a completed nomination form provided by the Office of Research Services.
3.4 Candidates may be granted the title of Fellow, Junior Research Fellow, Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow as defined in section 2.0 of this procedure.
3.5 All appointments shall be limited to a three-year term and are renewable for an unlimited number of terms. Recommendations from the Governing Body of a Centre to SCRAP shall be accompanied by the candidate's CV or resume and a completed nomination form provided by the Office of Research Services.
