Parent Policy: 11.1 Establishment, Operations and Review of Research Centres
A research centre/institute (these terms are used interchangeably) is created to promote and encourage scholarly activity of a basic or applied nature in an area that is not normally restricted to a single academic department. It is expected to offer new areas of research activity which align with the strategic plans and objective of Wilfrid Laurier University. This procedure outlines the process for the review of a research centre.
2.01 Members: members of a centre actively engage in the work of the centre and contribute to the centre through collaborative research, publishing, mobilization of knowledge, as well as seminars/conferences/workshops organized by the centre. It is expected that members will identify themselves as centre members in publications related to the focus of the centre. Members of a centre are expected to engage in some or all of the following activities:
a. co-publishing;
b. co-applications for grants and/or contracts;
c. co-supervision of students; and/or
d. co-presentations.
3.01 All centres/institutes will be reviewed once during each three-year term. Notice of the review will be communicated to the Director of the centre/institute by the Office of Research Services at least six months prior to the end of the centre/institute’s term.
3.02 As a centre/institute comes up for review, its Director will be asked to prepare and submit to the vice-president: research a report with the following information:
a. A progress report which includes a statement describing how and why the centre/institute has achieved or revised its original objectives;
b. A detailed description of most significant research accomplishments;
c. A detailed description of external investment to support the activities of the centre;
d. A current membership list and a detailed financial statement;
e. Reflections of the opinions of current membership;
f. Numbers of Highly Qualified Personnel (undergraduate and graduate students; postdoctoral fellows) involved in the centre’s activities (over the duration of the centre and since the last review);
a. A list of publications from the centre’s activities (or other, appropriate, academic measures of research activity);
b. A three-year plan which identifies future research directions and development strategies.
3.03 The centre review reports will be reviewed by the Senate Committee on Research and Publications (SCRAP), who will make a recommendation to Senate concerning the future of the centre/institute.
