Firstly, my two kids. I hope my pursuit of knowledge and education as a first-generation post-secondary school student inspire my kids to find their purpose and go for it.
Secondly, my community – as young black man who migrated to Canada 8 years ago as an international student, I hope other racialized folks find their voices, keep their head up high and lead within their sphere of influence.
I am inspired by the community of support colleagues who are keen on seeing one another flourish. This support transcends beyond the duties of work to finding ways to help others in our personal life. I remember joining Laurier in the summer of 2018 as a floater and went through a major life-change. My team rallied round me to provide the emotional support I needed at work during the term of my contract at that time. It was at that point I decided, I have found a new home at Laurier. This support is even seen in how staff members care about the wellbeing of each student to ensure each person is cared for on a personal level.
I see myself as a problem solver – someone who thrives in simplifying processes within a team and leading meaningful changes. I deeply care about hearing diverse perspectives and holding safe spaces for every individual.
I have had the privilege to work in diverse departments and teams at Laurier which I count as a blessing. One of the key themes that runs through all of my experiences in different teams/department at Laurier is an attitude of care and compassion.
One of the uniqueness of my current team is the openness that we share. We believe that clarity is kindness and each person is genuinely committed to see you thrive, not just in your role but in your career.
My career here has brought me to a place where I am driven to learn and conduct research about the enrolment of students in Canada’s multiracial and diverse society. As our world continues to be shaped by globalization, I see my role as an enrolment professional as a gatekeeper to PSE and I must use my position of privilege to ensure that diverse perspectives are heard and represented here at Laurier and in our community as a whole. This pursuit has led me to enrolling in the Masters of Education program – Student Affairs stream at Laurier.
