Giving that I lead a small team at the Institutional and Research Department, I always make sure to inspire great performance in the team. I make my best to communicate passion, purpose and the ultimate goals of projects to the team. I carefully listen to their recommendations and feedback, then taking action based on said feedback by leveraging my knowledge and experience. I trust my teams’ judgement in performing their tasks and provide them with wide area of options, while making myself available for assistance. I also provide opportunities for members on my team to grow and support them to be able to take new responsibilities.
I built a strong experience working at universities in the field of the Student Information Systems in the technical and functional tasks; in addition to working with the data as migration, mapping, processing, validation, analysis and creating various reports and analytics for the senior management and departments. I enjoy doing this type of work and this inspires me to utilize my experience and knowledge at Institutional Research and Planning Office (IR). One key point that inspires me to work at Laurier specifically is that Laurier is using Banner as ERP system where I was a key member in a team that implemented it at one of the universities in the Middle East. In general, universities for me are very inspiring places to work at since I can feel the enthusiasm of the youth who are starting to build their careers.
I believe that leading by example is a very good approach; I strive to implement that by working with the team collaboratively. Having good communication skills, being patient, knowledgeable are essential characteristics to being a leader, so, and this is what I make sure to follow at my role.
I consider myself to be working in such unique department at Laurier. The IR has a distinctive role to provide timely and relevant data, reports and analysis to the Laurier community to inform decision-making and effective strategic planning and to external stakeholders to fulfill a variety of reporting requirements. This allowed me to leverage my technical skills and to act as bridge connecting with the various business units. Furthermore, we are working under the supervision and guidance of the director of the IR who has long expertise in Project Management, Strategy, Consultations and Data Analysis which enables her to provide us with direction that helps us in moving forward. The Director is always available whenever we need her while she ensures our comfortable and safe working environment.
I am fortunate that I had the opportunity to work at Laurier which allowed me to collaborate with my colleagues at the office to be part of the team in achieving its goals and serving its purpose. My role gave me the opportunity to coordinate some tasks with different departments including ICT and other departments in order to improve our processes and reporting at the IR. Having good technical experience allowed me to be the contact person or lead in some projects at the IR. of course, maintaining a good relationship with all the co-workers is of utmost importance to me.
