I received my PhD in social-cultural anthropology from the University of Toronto in 2011, and my MA in social-cultural anthropology from York University in 2004.
Prior to joining Laurier, I was a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia’s Institute of Asian Research in 2011.
I am currently the assistant editor of City & Society, a journal that focuses on urban, transnational, and global issues.
My research mainly focuses on urban issues in Indonesia, and explores a number of themes including urban informal economies; urban transformations in post-authoritarian cities; and sovereignty, citizenship, and political organization in the city.
My PhD from the University of Toronto examined a government-organized relocation of street vendors in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It explored how a group of street traders sought to negotiate their rights in the context of the country’s recent transition to democracy.
I am currently working on a SSHRC-funded project (2014-2016) with Dr. Joshua Barker on urban infrastructures in Indonesia. The primary objective is to show that the physical and organizational structures of cities are key political terrains for understanding 21st-century urban politics. Our research explores how urban struggles over infrastructures are central to shaping how urban residents experience unequal citizenship and how various groups gain power in the city.
