Dr. HyeYoun Jang Biography

Dr. HyeYoun Jang is a conductor at Ewha Womans University in South Korea. Previously she was the Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. Prior to Minnesota, she was the Music Director of the Orchestra at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. She has served as Conductor of the Dubuque Symphony Youth Orchestra, Assistant Conductor of the North Texas Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Conductor of the University of Iowa Orchestra and the Opera Production, Apprentice Conductor of Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, and Conductor of NOVA Contemporary Ensemble at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Jang has been privileged to actively participate in valuable workshops and festivals including the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Gyeong-Gi Philharmonic Orchestra (South Korea), the Chun-Cheon City Philharmonic Orchestra (South Korea), and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. In 2019, she was the winner of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic International Workshop. She earned a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the University of Iowa. Dr. Jang completed her DMA in orchestra conducting at the University of North Texas.

Born in Busan, South Korea, Dr. Jang began her music studies through learning violin and piano. She studied composition and received both her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Music Composition at Ewha Woman's University in Seoul, Korea. She learned Korean traditional music while she studied at Ewha Woman's University especially the rhythms and string instruments. Her solo piano piece “Suite for Piano (2009)” is based on Korean traditional rhythms and Korean pentatonic scale.
