Voice student can’t say enough about his Laurier Music experience

Why did Mike Fan opt to study music at Laurier?

“The faculty was a really big factor,” explains the fourth year voice student. “They are a fantastic world-class faculty that have performed internationally. At the same time, they have a presence and an energy that is inviting, welcoming and really inspirational.”

Countless undergrad opportunities

Fan also appreciates Laurier Music’s intimate size.

“Laurier allows for unique undergrad performance opportunities – both voice and instrumental - that one wouldn’t get at some bigger schools. We have opportunities to take on large solo roles normally reserved elsewhere for Masters students,” he explains.

During his four years at Laurier, Fan has completed six theatre productions and six opera productions.

“These roles allowed me to really think about characterization and performance, and helped me grow as a performer, as an artist, and as a person,” he says.

A nurturing environment

Fan encourages students to get involved with the many opportunities available to them at Laurier in the form of clubs and extracurricular activities.

“It’s a great way to have a breather,” he explains. “You’re more efficient. You’re more inspired. You’re more motivated.”

Above all else, Fan loves the welcoming atmosphere and sense of community he’s found among his colleagues at Laurier.

“In something so personal as music, where you’re investing so much of your personal energy and creativity, it’s so important to have an environment like Laurier that invites you to explore and create,” he says.
