Print | PDFRenowned hip hop artist and Laurier alum, Shad (Shadrach Kabango), is returning to Wilfrid Laurier University to teach a special course titled "Hip-Hop to the World" during the fall semester of 2024. Following the success of his 2023 Hip Hop Artist in Residence Course, Shad brings his unparalleled expertise and passion for hip hop culture back to campus.
Shad's illustrious career spans seven full-length albums and three EPs since his debut in 2005. He has been recognized with numerous accolades, including a Juno Award for Rap Recording Of The Year in 2011 and five of his albums shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize—the most by any artist in the prize's history.
In "Hip-Hop to the World," open to both music and non-music students beyond their first year, Shad will delve into the unique approaches to poetry, performance, and production found in hip-hop music. Through listening, reading, practice, and dialogue, students will explore hip-hop's rich history, its impact on the music industry, and its broader cultural significance.
Shad's return underscores Laurier's commitment to offering innovative and enriching educational experiences that resonate beyond the classroom. His presence not only enriches the curriculum but also inspires students to explore new avenues of creativity and expression.
