His path from student to celebrated artist receives praise as his composition takes center stage in Laurier’s upcoming April 5th concert, performed by the Laurier Concert Choir.
Lapierre's connection with Laurier's music program began as a student pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition, a journey that sparked his fervent passion for choral music. Under the mentorship of faculty members like Glenn Buhr, Linda Catlin Smith, and Cam McKittrick, he refined his skills, laying the groundwork for his future endeavors.
However, it was his time singing with the Laurier Concert Choir, under the direction of Carolyn Neumann VanderBurgh, that left an indelible mark on Lapierre's musical future. This experience not only nurtured his love for choral music but also inspired the creation of his piece, "O Salutaris."
Originally conceived as a simple hymn during his high school years, "O Salutaris" has since evolved into a poignant choral masterpiece. Lapierre's composition process, marked by a delicate balance of simplicity and complexity, reflects his growth as a composer and his unwavering dedication to his craft.
As his composition found its way onto the program for Laurier's upcoming concert, Lapierre couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude. This performance represents a full-circle moment for the composer, as his journey comes full circle on the stage where it all began.
In anticipation of the concert, Lapierre shares his advice with aspiring composers, urging them to embrace every opportunity, stay curious, and let their passion guide them. For in the halls of Wilfrid Laurier University's Faculty of Music, dreams are not just realized—they are celebrated, nurtured, and given the chance to flourish."
Moreover, Lapierre's accolades extend beyond the confines of Laurier. The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir recently announced Justin Lapierre as their 2024 winner of the Debbie Fleming Prize for the Choral Composition Competition. He has been privileged to be one of ten selected composers for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's prestigious 'Explore the Score' program. His music has resonated with audiences across Canada, performed by esteemed ensembles like the Canadian Chamber Choir, the DaCapo Chamber Choir, and the Menno Singers. Excitement mounts for an upcoming June première, featuring many Laurier students and alumni, conducted by none other than alumnus Ben Wallace.
