Print | PDFOver the past month, there's been an undeniable buzz on our campus as we had the pleasure of hosting two remarkable honorary degree recipients from Wilfrid Laurier University: Janina Fialkowska (DLitt ’13) and Jane Archibald (BMus ’99, DMus ’23). Their presence brought a wave of excitement and inspiration as they generously shared their expertise and insights with our students.
Janina Fialkowska, a celebrated pianist, led an engaging studio class focused on the intricate world of classical piano. Her session was a masterclass in itself, as she delved into the nuances of each student's performance with meticulous attention, all while maintaining a sense of humor and relatability that kept everyone engaged. Anya Alexeyev, our Piano Coordinator, was impressed by Janina's ability to blend excellence with approachability, pushing students to reach new heights while creating an atmosphere of encouragement and warmth. The Question-and-Answer session that followed was a treasure trove of wisdom, with Janina's humble and graceful demeanor leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. Through her guidance, students were not just playing notes but discovering their own unique voices within the music, a testament to Janina's expertise and dedication.
Meanwhile, soprano Jane Archibald, an esteemed Faculty of Music alumna and recent recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Wilfrid Laurier University, shared her journey and wisdom with a select group of voice students. As a Laurier music graduate herself, Jane emphasized the importance of individual expression and staying true to one's artistic vision while remaining open to growth and learning. Associate Dean Kimberly Barber noted how Jane's feedback during performances emphasized the power of authenticity in artistic expression, captivating the audience with every word.
Though these events were separate, they shared a common thread—the extraordinary talent and enduring connection of Laurier's alumni and honorary degree recipients. Janina and Jane, both luminaries in the music world, returned to their alma mater to inspire and uplift the next generation of musicians, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and encouragement that will resonate for years to come.
