Print | PDFShad, the renowned hip hop artist and proud alumnus of Wilfrid Laurier University, returned to his alma mater for an exclusive residency in the Faculty of Music from September 25th to 29th, 2023. With a career glittering with accolades, including a Juno Award and multiple Polaris Music Prize nominations, Shad brought a wealth of experience and insight to the campus.
His visit was marked by a series of engaging events that captivated Laurier students, staff, alumni, and the broader community. From navigating technology and change for creatives alongside Daniel Habashi, a fellow Laurier alumnus, to sharing invaluable experiences in the music industry with TOBi, another Laurier graduate and Juno Award winner, Shad's presence ignited a spark of inspiration.
From discussions on navigating technology and change in the music industry to sharing insights into the complexities of Canada's hip hop scene, Shad's presence sparked enthusiasm and motivation among attendees. One of the highlights was the "I Just Can't Not Be Free" showcase, where Shad mentored emerging hip hop talents from local universities and high schools, hinting at a promising future for Canadian hip hop.
Beyond the campus, Shad hosted private events with elementary students, leaving a profound impact on young minds with his charisma and talent. As the residency concluded, whispers of future collaborations with Shad circulated, promising more opportunities for learning and creative expression.
In his final talk on "The Art of Vulnerability for Creatives," Shad left attendees with a renewed appreciation for the power of vulnerability in artistic endeavors.
