Esther enjoys working in the community and previously worked with AIDS Alert Ghana; Faculty of Law, University of Ghana; and the African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario.
Esther will be sharing her research titled A Future to Build: Highlighting the Activist Experiences of Black High School Girls in South Western Ontario. Esther enriches the scholarship on Black student resistance by examining how oppositional behavior creates change opportunities. Her research delves into the advocacy experiences of 20 African high school girls in Ontario, employing narrative inquiry with a specific focus on anti-Black racism.
Treisha Hylton (she/her) is an assistant professor with the FSW. Treisha’s research and teaching is centered in Black Feminist theorizing, and particularly focused on Black girls, Black women faculty, sports, and community partnership and engagement.
Treisha will be sharing her research titled Black Girl Surf Jamaica: Building Capacity, Partnership and Reclaiming Knowledge. Using photovoice and Black feminist ethnography, the study aims to explore the intersectional experiences of Black girls who surf in Jamaica, identify the barriers to and facilitators of participation in surfing, and develop recommendations for Surf Girls Jamaica’s recruitment and retention strategies.
