Nicole received her PhD in Marketing and International Business from the University of Auckland. She also holds an MSc (Technology Management) and BComm Hons (Marketing) from the University of Saskatchewan. In 2010, she received an honorary doctorate from the Turku School of Economics (Finland). Nicole was appointed the Lazaridis Chair in International Entrepreneurship & Innovation in 2020. She also holds a Visiting Research Professor appointment at LUT University, Finland.
Nicole has held academic appointments in New Zealand (University of Waikato, University of Auckland) and Canada (University of Calgary, Wilfrid Laurier University). Her various visiting appointments include positions at Hanken (Vaasa, Finland), Turku School of Economics (Finland), University of Glasgow (Scotland), University of Canterbury (NZ), and the Technical University of Munich (Germany).
Nicole studies young technology firms, focusing on topics at the intersection of marketing strategy, international business, and entrepreneurship. Her work is published in the top journals across all three of these areas, including Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Academy of Management Review. She is consistently ranked in the top 1% of business and management scholars in the world according to the annual studies conducted by the research team of Ioannidis et al. from Stanford University.

Nicole sits on numerous editorial boards and is currently a Consulting Editor at the International Journal of Management Reviews. From 2009-2022, she was Field Editor (Marketing, International Entrepreneurship) at the Journal of Business Venturing. She was also Consulting Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies from 2017-2022.
