Collaborating Across Cultures: Intercultural Group Work, a video and learning guide for educators and students, was created by Deena Mandell alongside educators and student colleagues from Teaching and Learning and the Faculty of Social Work.
The video and accompanying learning guide address microaggressions – verbal or nonverbal slights that demean someone from marginalized groups. Microaggressions can make learning environments toxic and interfere with learning.
The video is based on real experiences of students and faculty members and shines a light on the lived experiences of a number of marginalized groups, focusing on those who have been previously educated outside of Canada. The learning guide provides strategies for addressing exclusion and promoting inclusivity. View the trailer below.
“Perhaps the most gratifying outcome from this project was the one expressed by one of the students who presented with us: ‘Through the making of this video we [students who have come from other countries] have come to feel that we can and do belong here. More than that, we feel that now we have a platform from which to speak with legitimacy to our peers and professors about what real inclusion means.’,” says Mandell.
