Throughout his fellowship, Gavin Brockett has developed and introduced five globally connected, active learning classes between Waterloo and Istanbul, and taught field courses delivered in Istanbul, Israel-Palestine, and south-east Asia. These courses have encouraged international colleagues to expand their horizons with regards to how to teach and engage with today’s students.
“The opportunity to connect using technology today inspires students to ask questions and confront difficult answers, all the while navigating intercultural differences,” says Brockett. “If we can invest the effort necessary to facilitate such learning, then perhaps in the future our students can contribute to solving the very real problems that require collaboration within countries and across borders.”
Brockett also teaches experiential learning courses that engage local Syrian newcomers and serves as the Faculty Advisor for International Students Overcoming War, a student-led and student-funded humanitarian initiative which educates students about the impacts of international conflict and has provided over 16 scholarships to students from conflict areas since 2016.
