Sept. 8, 2020
Print | PDFThroughout COVID-19, members of the Wilfrid Laurier University community have come together virtually to support one another during this challenging time.
The Laurier community will again come together throughout September to support Canadians living with cystic fibrosis during the Virtual Shinerama fundraising campaign in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
“Shinerama will look different this year, as many aspects move online,” says Jayden Robins, Laurier student and Shinerama coordinator at the Waterloo campus. “But we have an ambitious fundraising goal and invite our communities to support Shinerama events to make this year’s campaign a success.”
The Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union has organized various virtual fundraising and awareness events throughout September for students, faculty, staff and community members:
While you won’t find Laurier students shining shoes or washing cars this year, you will find them involved with virtual events planned for Shine Day on Saturday, Sept. 12. Laurier faculty, staff, alumni and members of the community are also invited to participate in Shine Day events. Stay tuned to the Laurier Shinerama Facebook page for more details.

If you're looking to get rid of empty liquor or beer bottles, Laurier's Shinerama team will happily take them at the Shine Day Bottle Drive in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Bring your bottles to Laurier's Northdale Campus at 66 Hickory Street West in Waterloo between noon and 4 p.m. on Sept. 12. Laurier Shinerama volunteers will be outfitted in personal protective equipment and will unload the bottles from your vehicle. The first 50 people to drop off their bottles will receive a voucher for a free large, three-topping pizza courtesy of Domino's Pizza.
Talking in an online meeting while muted: it happens to everyone, so have some fun with it! Donate to Cystic Fibrosis Canada every time you’re caught talking in an online meeting while muted.

For many, Shinerama is synonymous with Laurier’s Orientation Week, but some community members got an early start on fundraising. On July 16, more than 60 people participated in Canvases for a Cause, a virtual paint night fundraiser led by artist Justine Sheuy and hosted by radio host and CF advocate Mike Farwell. The event raised more than $650 for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Launched at Laurier in 1968, Shinerama has become Canada’s largest post-secondary campus fundraiser. In 2019, Laurier’s Shinerama fundraising events and activities raised $131,014.78, bringing the university’s cumulative total to more than $3 million dollars.
