Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University is the recipient of a 2021 Regional Partner Award from Canadian Blood Services. The award celebrates the commitment and generosity of Laurier blood donors who give blood to support Canada’s Lifeline. Laurier was one of five organizations in Canada to receive an award in this category during the 2021 Honouring Canada’s Lifeline national event held virtually on Nov. 29.
“Your unwavering support for Canada’s Lifeline changes lives, saves lives and helps our campus communities thrive. Thank you for being golden.”
Laurier is a proud member of Canadian Blood Services’ Partner for Life program. Since 2010, Laurier has supported the program by making an annual pledge of blood donations. To date, Laurier blood donors have contributed more than 5,000 units of blood, forever changing the lives of cancer patients, motor-vehicle accident victims, and others in need of blood.
“Laurier extends sincere thanks and gratitude to our community of blood donors,” says Carleen Carroll, assistant vice-president: External Relations at Laurier. “Your unwavering support for Canada’s Lifeline changes lives, saves lives and helps our campus communities thrive. Thank you for being golden.”
The generosity of Laurier blood donors has remained strong amid the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the last 21 months, Laurier blood donors have contributed over 900 units of blood – one-fifth of the university’s donations made during the last 11 years.
“Whether they are donating blood, cheering on donating teammates or raising awareness for the need for blood, Laurier Athletics’ community members are making life-changing impacts in our campus communities.”
The significant increase in blood donations by Laurier donors is due, in large part, to the collegial spirit of the annual Blood Battle. The friendly competition sees varsity sports teams at Laurier and the University of Waterloo compete in monthly blood donation challenges. Currently, in its third year, the Blood Battle has helped Laurier to exceed its 2021 pledge goal of 350 units of blood. At the time of publishing, Laurier donors contributed 466 units of blood and could surpass 2020’s donation total of 477 units.
“We continue to be inspired by the dedication that our student athletes, coaches and trainers give to the Blood Battle,” says KP Anand, associate director: business operations with Athletics and Recreation at Laurier. “Whether they are donating blood, cheering on donating teammates or raising awareness for the need for blood, Laurier Athletics’ community members are making life-changing impacts in our campus communities.”
The need for blood is ongoing. Appointment times are available throughout December. All members of the Laurier community can support the university’s Canadian Blood Services pledge by using Laurier’s pledge ID, WILF001529, when donating or completing the Partners for Life registration form.
It is safe to donate blood during COVID-19. Visit the Canadian Blood Services website for details about donor health requirements, screening measures and cleaning practices.
