Laurier cohosts virtual talk with award-winning author and sexual assault survivor Chanel Miller

Chanel Miller, the award-winning author of Know My Name: A Memoir and sexual assault survivor, will speak to audiences from Wilfrid Laurier University, Carleton University and Ryerson University during the virtual talk “Stories Spark Change,” moderated by Toronto-based author and Ryerson University journalism instructor Eternity Martis. The event takes place Jan. 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Miller and Martis are prominent voices on campus life, sexual violence, and the experiences of racialized survivors in society. They will discuss how the reclamation of one’s voice, story, and experiences can create space for justice and healing.

“The Office of Dispute Resolution and Sexual Violence Support is excited to co-create space for Chanel Miller and Eternity Martis to dive into an important conversation for post-secondary campuses,” says Sarah Scanlon, sexual violence response coordinator at Laurier. “This space is for the whole Laurier community: it is for survivors, their supports, friends and allies to create a culture of consent at Laurier. We are honoured to learn from the collaborative wisdom of two such impactful writers, activists and survivors."

“Stories Spark Change” is cohosted by Laurier’s Office of Dispute Resolution and Sexual Violence Support, the Department of Equity and Inclusive Communities at Carleton University, and the Office of Sexual Violence Support and Education at Ryerson University. The event is open to students, staff, and faculty from Laurier, Ryerson and Carleton at no charge. Spaces are limited and registration is required.
