Laurier mourns the passing of Associate Professor Martin Morris

Wilfrid Laurier University is saddened by the passing of Martin Morris, an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies.

Martin joined the Laurier community in 2005 and taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including History of Communication Thought and the very popular Music in Society. He is remembered as a brilliant scholar and charismatic colleague, as well as an ardent fan of the Liverpool Football Club.

Prior to joining Laurier, Martin was an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Windsor and a Sciences and Humanities Research Council postdoctoral fellow in the Literature program at Duke University in North Carolina. Martin received his PhD in Political Science from York University in Toronto in 1996. His scholarly articles on philosophy, critical theory, the history of political thought and Canadian politics have been widely published.

At the time of his passing, Martin was working on a new book manuscript for SUNY Press entitled Critical Theory and Popular Music, as well as a research project titled “Indigenous Performance Art, Spirituality and Politics in Post Secular Democratic Contexts: Studies of Māori and First Nations Peoples.”  

Martin is survived by his daughter, River, and well-remembered by family members, colleagues and friends. Details about a celebration of life for Martin will be shared once they have been finalized.
