Laurier’s Department of English and Film Studies hosts panel event on posthumanism, human-technological relations and bioethics

Wilfrid Laurier University’s Department of English and Film Studies, in partnership with Brock University’s Posthumanism Research Institute, is hosting a panel discussion on posthumanism, bioethics and the relationships between humans and technology as part of its Posthumanism: Cinema, Philosophy, Media series.

“More Than Human: Posthumanism, Human-Technological Relations and Bioethics” will be held virtually on March 29 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. The event is free and open to everyone, but registration is required.

“This roundtable discussion seeks to break down the barriers between different perspectives upon and methods of analysis of transhumanism, biohacking, and bioethics,” reads the event description. “From film studies to a cultural studies lens on biohacking as a subculture to the latest mind-body interface technologies, how we take up our relationships to and with technological advancements is central to how we understand what it means to be (or not to be) human.”

Speakers will include:

• Andrea Austin, associate professor in the Department of English and Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University
• Jeremy Hunsinger, associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University
• William Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of British Columbia
• Alex Pearlman, communications director at Concentric by Ginkgo; science and technology reporter; and research affiliate at MIT Media Lab
