Laurier Sustainability Office seeks volunteers for community tree planting events at Waterloo schools

The Sustainability Office at Wilfrid Laurier University is looking to add some purple and gold to an upcoming green project in Waterloo.

Laurier faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university are invited to help plant “microforests” at two elementary schools – Lincoln Heights Public School and Sandowne Public School – on Nov. 5 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

The initiative is supported by the Sustainability Office, the Laurier Renewable Energy student club, and community partner Sustainable Waterloo Region. Registration is required.

A microforest planting involves the conversion of a small area of land into a naturalized space focused on restoring biodiversity by planting a variety of native trees and shrubs. Microforests have been planted in cities around the world. Their benefits include cooling effects from additional shade, cleaner air, enhanced soil conditions and mitigation of stormwater runoff.

Volunteers will be provided with training on physical safety, COVID-19 protocols and planting. Gardening gloves, hand sanitizer, a snack and lunch will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle and wear closed-toe shoes.

Students can include their participation as part of their Laurier Experience Record, while employee participation is eligible for inclusion in the university’s Green Office program.
