Print | PDFWilfrid Laurier University’s Generative AI Committee has developed an institutional statement on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and principles of use for faculty and staff.
The statement and principles provide faculty and staff guidance for using generative AI in a responsible, ethical, transparent, and educated manner that is compliant with applicable policy and legislation in Canada.
Laurier’s generative AI principles of use align with the institutional expectations of use for all types of software, with the understanding that generative AI has characteristics that require enhanced caution and care.
“With the rapid evolution and development of generative AI technologies, it is crucial that we set clear standards for their application at Laurier,” says Heidi Northwood, provost and vice-president: academic. “These principles provide a roadmap for Laurier faculty and staff, encouraging them to leverage the power of generative AI to augment their work in a responsible and ethical manner.”
The principles of use emphasize informed decision-making, encouraging faculty and staff to understand the capabilities and limitations of generative AI before integrating it into their work.
Laurier’s Generative AI Committee will continue to meet regularly to update and refine guidance on generative AI for the university as the technologies evolve.
