Print | PDFLaurier's men's cricket team won the third annual Waterloo Cup, defeating the University of Waterloo. The final score was Laurier 105/8 (19.5), University of Waterloo 104/9 (20.0).
Some of the best cricket talent from southwestern Ontario universities will descend on Waterloo Park Sept. 17 and 18 as Wilfrid Laurier University hosts the 2024 Waterloo Cup. Teams from Laurier, Brock University, and the University of Waterloo will compete in the tournament.
“We are thrilled to see the Waterloo Cup enter its third year,” said Peter Donahue, Laurier’s associate director of International Student Support. “This event not only showcases the incredible talent of our athletes, but also highlights the diverse and inclusive spirit of our campus communities.”
Jointly sponsored by Laurier’s International Student Support department in the Dean of Students office and the Southern Ontario Cricket Association (SOCA), the Waterloo Cup reflects over a decade of collaborative efforts to promote cricket within Ontario post-secondary institutions and create opportunities for international and Canadian students to play. Those efforts are also supported by Canadian College and University Cricket and university athletic departments.
“By bringing together exceptional teams and players from various institutions, the Waterloo Cup offers a platform for athletes to display their skills, foster competitive spirit, and build lasting connections within the cricketing community,” said Giridhar Bannaravuri, president of the Southern Ontario Cricket Association. “It also highlights Laurier's commitment to promoting and advancing cricket as a vital sport in the academic and athletic landscape.”
The tournament is known for being not only an athletic competition, but a celebration of players and supporters from different cultural backgrounds who are building community and friendship through the sport.
The Waterloo Cup begins on Sept. 17. A match between Laurier and Brock will take place at 9 a.m. followed by a match between Brock and University of Waterloo at 1 p.m. On September 18, a match between Laurier and Waterloo will take place at 9 a.m., with the championship final at 1 p.m. All matches take place in Waterloo Park, and are free and open to the public.
