Q: What have you been doing since graduation?
A: After graduation, I began my career at KPMG within the assurance practice focused on public and technology company audits. During my time at KPMG, I was well supported in the completion of the UFE and my CPA designation. After three years at KPMG, I joined the finance group at D2L, a software company delivering a world class learning technology solutions. On a personal level, I’m a proud husband and a father of an amazing one-year old son, who keeps day-to-day life interesting.
Q: What was the most memorable part of your degree experience?
A: It is difficult to put my finger on just one thing – so I won’t try. When I reflect back, the most memorable part of the degree experience is witnessing the development of myself and peers. The transition from a naive first-year to a competent, confident and directed graduate is pretty incredible. We should continue to challenge ourselves to replicate that learning and development after graduation.
Q: How has your degree helped you in your career?
A: The BBA program offers a very strong accounting stream, but – equally as important – has a broad scope, providing exposure to all pillars of business. This has been incredibly important in my career thus far, ensuring the accounting function goes beyond the numbers to partner with the business and drive value. True partnership and execution is achieved through strong working relationships, and the high volume of group work throughout the BBA program was a great stepping stone for this.
Q: What's next on the horizon?
A: My focus continues to be on challenging myself and ensuring my pace of learning and development remains high. Now in my fourth year at D2L, I am extremely proud and excited to be part of an excellent team that has successfully grown the business to a size and scale that very few have accomplished in Canada. I look forward to new experiences as we move into future chapters, and hope to share these learnings with others, and continue to build on the tech momentum locally and across the country.
Q: What advice would you give to first-year students?
A: I would advise first-year students to dig in and take advantage of their time in the program to the fullest. Admittedly and regrettably, it wasn’t until later in the program that I truly leveraged the opportunity at hand. For most, the undergraduate years are the final years solely dedicated to learning and development so take full advantage of that. Be curious, challenge yourself, work hard and find enjoyment in the process.
